Part 1

The brine is yearly drained

in, through the earthworm’s many tunnel

to rinse the passage at sediment humble

for the bloom and buds refrain.

I have become quite deranged.

In soft, wet, spring, I am ripe to pummel.

Tremulous dew expelled by great grumbles

leaking sanguine, shaded stains.

The taciturn transpiration that we cannot see

bleeding the divine through porous designs,

muck-sewn, to birth in perennial legacy

with nutrients sapped off eggshells and rinds.

The melancholy will still arrive annually.

Ophelia, derided, floats on overripe minds.

Part 2

Platitudes so meager have not sustained

what has decayed and therein muddled,

surmised from the fray, a waif tumbled

and soaked to soften, like sugarcanes,

an early spring’s cerise will be bartered off again.

The law, the lord, high-blooded, befuddled,

coronets of evil orders, freed and humbled

now scum-sheet blooms, swept up away by fae.

Remitted from roses, and in death with lilies,

the fat of the cut singed away, the alkaline

rising, pluming, and at will in each breeze

in cycles of erosion and the runoff of all time.

No blossom, besotted, but aerated grease,

spared gore from the mantle, extolled from young hides.

Part 3 [Fin.]

Lifting out and beyond her mortal spase

in the vagrant’s discarded abode of a bubble,

severed to sustain an ache-filled hovel,

brought back to all toil by wake of a phase.

Cud, underfoot, in the ruminants graze

a somnial return thus undone. Under charred rubble,

needled in by maggot pates, and the larvae rustle

reeds, in nine rows, woven into a maze

with mycelium slipped from the swamp to the sea.

Waxed flesh, subsumed, and no longer mine

in the sallow, once warm, pained and unheeded

and harangued-unto waterlogged bliss for no crime.

Mined over soft silt, whereupon penance is metered

in cycles of erosion and the runoff of all time.

Just a mooring,

just the one hitch.

A sallow-faced woman.

Her digits slip from their grasp on the pen,

she is dying in a stupor in an opium den.

Always pouring 

from the spigot 

something foreign

amounting to an act of a man-made god.

The poor of the world, addled by all fraud.

All simmering

beneath the flesh

raging torment.

Revoking our most base, mortal endowment,

flooding the senses and dulling all torment.

Always loosing, 

all the time,

ignoring portents.

Buried the intent to blind beyond the eyes;

O, to feel as free as when the addict imbibes.

If only it could last for all of cruel time,

and not, with retches, ream in each sunrise.

All marauding,

works of thieves,

will rot, turn ashen.

Seeking return from worst desperation,

the brink of the end, of decapitation,

a cycled refrain: a song of people’s liberation,

God save the addicts, hear my invocation.

Despite notably successful strides made toward equalizing women’s agency in the public arena the resounding narrative is a complete reduction, only vaguely resembling a coherent perspective in light of so many heartbreaking current events, and is one that completely disregards widely-accepted resources to deconstructing the intentions of power structures from a scholarly perspective.

I do not expect news anchors and reporters to be indulging in psychopomp or speculation the likes of which I am about to engage in myself, but I would at least expect some of the coverage by supposedly reputable publications on the whole of the unraveling Epstein-file crackdown to at least reference the fruits of so much publically-verifiable research.

Namely that which was conducted by the renowned expert on the matter, Whitney Webb, on the fused surveillant and organized criminal enterprise that birthed the Epstein/Maxwell trafficking operation,— the one that reached deep into both the pockets and personnel files of many prominent figures on both sides of the aisle, (not to mention across the globe,) —elements of the criminal legacy so conveniently left out of mainstream media’s allegedly unbiased reporting on the ongoing investigations, and subsequent depositions, connected to the matter of Jeffrey Epstein.

Despite all caveats orchestrated by the animating and optical powers of a rapidly technologically-developing, state-directed information eco-system intended toward the cultivation of five-second attention spans among American news-consumers, we find a great boon in the neglected space for ambiguity left by so much inadequate journalism. The weaponization of the feigned ignorance of the powerful can only go so far, whereas the connective tissues articulated only by mere speculation and outside evaluation can tread for miles.

And now as the civilian sheep of a deeply broken nation, armed only with our newfound but disorganized speculative power, we are compelled to discern the trending strategies of the power structure we are beholden to only between the lines of what we decidedly are, and are not, told by those talking heads who unwittingly give so much away while also saying absolutely nothing at all, particularly about topics that deserve a much deeper dive than they are given by legacy media.

Starting with the frameworks provided by Hooks as they apply to both the health of the family unit and the health of communities within the whole of society, ranging through my own interpretations of the sheer insufficiency of coverage at the national level surrounding the evidenced harmful realities, and endless human casualties, that result from a for-profit business model having absorbed the whole of the United States Government, (as is the tragedy of systemic disorder that we subsist through today,) I hope to illustrate the phenomenology of a system built to cover the tracks of financial stakeholders rather than preserve the wellbeing of a populace.

I contend that this is our reality as the American people, and it is one under which we would be remiss, or just plain foolish, to believe the far-reaching capabilities of a burgeoning techno-surveillance state would ever leave a consequential stone un-turned as it applies to any of their dealings, instead of the far greater likelihood that the procedural burying of said stone of ill repute was long ago coded into the mechanisms of that nexus of power whose operations extend through both shadowy, secretive darkness, and the clear light of day in our society.

Hooks was a central figure in the early construction of the analytical framework of intersectionality, the consideration of how all forms of oppression are interlinked in their facilitation by the state and the subsidiary power structures under its umbrella, and from there the development of the notion of “Patriarchal Compensation.”

In so many words, this concept illustrates the compensatory dynamic of women in society (and subsequent children, families, etc.,) as an allotment afforded to men by virtue of their existence, regardless of socio-economic status. In this way, while the working man’s body, the fruits of his labor, and his very psyche can be abused regularly by the machinations of an unforgiving schema of progress, in contrast to which he is absolutely powerless as an independent agent, he maintains an un-earned, ultimate dominion within the home and family structure that satiates his basic desire for agency, autonomy, and control.

Inevitably resultant from so much pent-up aggression, un-exercised drive, and a fated sense of lost potential on the part of working-class men, at least under this model, the women and children of the working-class home-unit are left to face the brunt of the domain’s ultimate arbiter and authority, and the violent displacements of his rage.

King of the castle, king of the castle…

As Hooks describes it, “Unlike working women, working men are fed daily a fantasy diet of male supremacy and power. In actuality, they have very little power and they know it…By condoning and perpetuating male domination of women to prevent rebellion on the job, ruling male capitalists ensure that male violence will be expressed in the home and not in the work force.”

The rage of the working man, and his inability to conclusively reflect upon it whether it be for time’s sake or the social stigma surrounding men’s processing of their own emotions, optimizes him into an unwitting state-agent: one who will beat a sense of submission into his family with his fists before any public arena or institution needs lift a finger, solidifying within them the precariously-deconstructed sense of self (or lack thereof) whose instillment in the civilian population at the mass-scale is essential to upholding our present systemic ineptitudes into the future.

And yet in the year of 2026 where we have heard the phrase “male loneliness epidemic” more times than we can count, I fear that the already evidently morally-bankrupt status quo seeks to integrate the mounting grievances of so many perpetually undesirable and sexless young men into their calculated approach to rekindling the infrastructural oppression of women and children, (starting with people of color to complement the Trump’s Administration’s blatant white nationalism and structurally-reinforced racism,) particularly under state mechanisms such as the Department of Children and Families, Child Protective Services, and various Department of Homeland Security and Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, off-shoots, and detainment facilities under their purview.

“The entry of women into the work force, which also serves the interests of capitalism, has taken even more control over women away from men. Therefore men rely more on the use of violence to establish and maintain a sex role hierarchy in which they are in a dominant position,” wrote Hooks, who died in 2021, in “Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center” in 1984.

It is my fear that knowing this, the opportunistic capitalist architects of the working-class reality will create cavities of oversight at lower levels of authority within the superstructure, under which individual actors will be provided discretionary authority and systemic cover in their respective roles as a state-sanctioned outlet for the sexual abuse and violence sought to be perpetuated by multitudes of inconsequential, everyday men; something those ruling forces likely see as a “necessary evil” among the humble ranks of society that they view like cattle, and through the warped lens of so much “sunk-cost” (which they seek to inevitably automize away from,) anyway.

Further, likely because they engage in such horrific violence as a twisted form of recreation, themselves. Or, at least, because they rub shoulders with some very important business liaisons that do.

While the intentionality of such a failed design as that belonging to all measures of social welfare in American society is still merely speculative, if not conspiratorial, it is indisputable that instances of such oversight typically attributed to systemic faculty-deterioration and resource diminishment at the community-level have persisted in our country for a long while.

Illustrative phenomena of the American legacy that wholesale child endangerment has become is the “Foster-Care to Sex Trafficking Pipeline,” a widely-observed disproportion in the amount of trafficking victims whose circumstances of grooming were facilitated despite state intervention in the life of the child, if that grooming was not perpetrated through that level of state involvement to begin with.

The vast majority of these forces, notably cited by Emily Selig in “Statistically Speaking..,” that drive vulnerable individuals into circumstances of trafficking or coerced sex work/prostitution, namely American youth living in poverty, appear in line with the inherently exploitative “survival sex” paradigm which represents the realities of most sex work on the global scale. Seemingly only in America, however, are such influences and dangerous forces perpetrated by bad actors within the ranks of state-funded public service, and so very frequently.

And yet the Democratic Party’s recent boon landed them $50 million smackeroonies to be mobilized towards child and eldercare legislation, and resource-allocation to those essential services, in advance of the upcoming midterms.

We’ll see how they decide to use it…

In the meantime, do we feel like doing any audits into these failed government agencies that have facilitated the abuse of children, and the authoritative bodies that shepherded the subsequent cover-ups of those crimes? Maybe delve into some of those Bank of America board members who likely knew a thing or two about the Epstein/Maxwell enterprise, you know, the ones most likely named in the litigative documents leading up to that out-of-court settlement that just occurred last week? No? Figures…

Whether it be of their own evil proclivities or mere proximity to that generally understood code of silence among authoritarians, no one is surprised when the public displays meant to depict endeavors toward authentic transparency are met with lackluster reception, if they are even believed to begin with, by the commoners who are endlessly pandered to by both red and blue establishmentarian-sweetheart officials alike.

Insofar as so many of our elected officials who run their campaigns on social issues and contemporary sources of need in our society skate only upon the shallow surface of those matters, for the sake of crafting a desirable public image, the onus of substantiating the systemic changes that would quell so much need and suffering is thrust squarely upon the American public.

Multiple victims of the Epstein/Maxwell trafficking enterprises had interactions with social welfare institutions such as Child Protective Services and the Department of Children and Families leading up to, during, and after their experiences as victims of sex trafficking. In the scale of all of the contemporary sources of need in our nation contrasted to the inefficacy of these institutions nationwide, it is no surprise that the paper trails of state intervention into the lives of those who later became subject to investigations into the Epstein/Maxwell trafficking network, by virtue of their status as formerly victimized children, are nowhere to be found.

Among alternative factors doing their part to uphold the barely-hidden corporate criminality inherent to American governance, I have come to believe that so much of these interconnected enterprises of earthly evils are upheld by a continual reliance on a series of “fall guys,” who are chosen for their cruelty as men, but are easily discarded for their working-class or impoverished backgrounds as inconsequential pawns in contrast to the real movers and shakers; for whom they live as foot-soldiers and, sooner or later, die or are imprisoned for as conveniently-placed red herrings, distractions away from the wholeness of a criminal legacy that always operated well-beyond their pay grade.

And yet, more often than not, the hatchet is buried along with these, more or less, inconsequential schmucks: the investigation stops there. “We solved the crime!”

Scooby-Doo style.

Not unlike the New Jerseyan Gangsters in the waste management industry characterized in “The Sopranos,” or Jimmy Hoffa in the orbit of the Teamsters, taken down in the public arena while the upper-eschelon directors of their respective rackets remained in the shadows and at the heights of luxury.

Not unlike the low-level actors in the Epstein/Maxwell trafficking operation, and others involved with earlier child sex-trafficking rings that further implicate the likes of Trump, Dershowitz, and Wexner, such as the father of the late Virginia Giuffre, an evidenced child predator; and the father of William Sascha Riley, whose son alleges he was a low-level cog in the latter enterprise who used his pilot’s license to transport trafficking victims at the behest of the conglomerate of wealthy people whom he allowed to violently abuse his own child for years,— in addition to multiple others whose kidnapping, trafficking, rapes and murders he helped to facilitate to satisfy the sick demands of his employers in that time-frame.

Not unlike any number of district judges, police officers, social workers, and other roles under the “public service” umbrella that have been markedly abused in recent memory by individual bad actors to harm women and children, either through coercion or violence.

Riley’s testimony, which can be found on the Substack profile of Lisa Noelle Voldeng included in a multi-part interview entitled “Don’t Worry: Boys Are Hard to Find,” details his experiences as a trafficking victim wherein he witnessed the murder of two girls, at least one of whom was brought into contact with his traffickers through her time in foster care.

***Riley’s allegations are unsubstantiated but I have left mention of his testimony in this narrative for purposes of elucidating the propensity of our contemporary structures of power to enlist the socially disenfranchised to their ultimate aims by endowing them with the agency to perpetuate violence, which is the overall subject of my critique and analyses. For further reading on the various gaps and loose-ends culminant from the details Riley has divulged about his alleged experiences, I suggest Dr. Laura Robinson’s Substack pieces, “Sascha Riley and the Long Hangover of the Satanic Panic,” and “I Have De-Bunked Your Article on Sascha Riley,” included in the source list below.***

A system of governance that abides by an inherently abusive model relies upon the perpetuation of that abuse by both the mechanisms of the enterprise as a whole, and the degree to which various conditional elements of life in a society have concocted a culture in the populace that is circumstantially ripe for individual civilian actors to become wholly desensitized to violence on a net scale. The engendered behavior of effectively-manufactured state-agents who uphold said oppression on behalf of the superstructure is complementary to the ultimate end-goal of the machine, which is a mass defeatist resignation to the systems of oppression perpetually used to subjugate the populations who occupy the lower socio-economic rungs of American society.

The after-effects of so much structural violence (a Foucaultian device used to discern the orchestration of widely-scaled social epidemics and maladies that are imposed through infrastructural and state agencies through a harm-based lens,) alongside a rising cost of living adequate to reduce even the most morally unsinkable individual into a base survival-mode, has been an immeasurable asset in terms of the wide-ranging abilities of a recruitment model that enlists the blood relatives, foster parents, and otherwise mandated-protectors of vulnerable children into the role of trafficker, themselves, to serve the creation of that endless supply of vulnerable victims that the corporate elite seemingly expect to be provided at their each and every, inhumanly cruel, whim, beck, and call.

Structural violence and sexual abuse, alike, engender the soul-shattering psychological conditions relied upon by the late-stage capitalist model to manufacture perpetually-vulnerable personality types that are malleable to the designs of the state.

Whatever, and however cruel, that those designs may be.

It is a similar predation upon a systematically-destroyed inner world that is seemingly utilized in the distractive measures taken by enterprise media, as of late, to garner attention away from the far-reaching implications of the Epstein files; as well as to reduce the evidenced realities of the surrounding, snaking corporate network that facilitated both violent crimes against children, and copious white-collar financial crimes, to the fallacious conclusion that it was this one man alone whose agency, wealth, and immorality sustained it.

To enlist child abusers and endangerers at such a scale as that which is, evidently, necessary to quell the bloodlust of the ruling class, requires high-level, big-picture thinking which suggests to me that this model has been intentionally cultivated in a syndicated, top-down effort for decades, if not longer.

Even the scarce agency that so many victims of the Epstein/Maxwell trafficking ring were able to exercise in their free time was calculatedly mobilized by their abusers, who would pay them to seek out other vulnerable children to be used, abused, and discarded in the same way that they, themselves, had been violated by any number of Epstein/Maxwell-connected elites.

It is my contention that the self-perpetuative devices existent at the “grunt” level of systems of abuse are held in place for the sakes of both their perpetual expansion and a certain level of plausible deniability, to be kept on the back-burner in case there ever comes a day where the big-boss-man has to cover his ass. His much more valuable ass.

Whether such a reality is owed to the reliance of copious interconnected agencies in the intelligence sphere on the honeypot/blackmail model, the one that has proliferated in this country’s spheres of intelligence since so much collusion between Roy Cohn, J. Edgar Hoover, and Cardinal Francis Spellman in the Blue Suite at the Plaza Hotel, or if the amount of perpetual material security endowed to the wealthy upon the circumstances of their birth results in a neurological chemical imbalance that influences them to torture the poor children of the world for some sick thrill as almost an inevitability, is up to you, my dearest reader.

Once again, the parsed-back skin which reveals the trends urged into the public consciousness by so much rampant speculation could be easily quelled by government transparency, and the auditing of these complicit agencies. But no such measures have been broached by a single representative on either side of the establishment’s aisle.

Independent Senatorial Candidate out of New Hampshire, Tim Harris, attempts to illustrate the preparative system-level approach that has allowed this pre-emptive victimization model to flourish, in a blog post on his Substack profile from February 4, 2026, entitled “The Pipeline.”

He writes, “188 children didn’t appear by magic. Each one was identified as vulnerable, contacted by a recruiter, transported to a property, abused repeatedly, sometimes paid to recruit others, and kept silent.”

These are the unconditional realities with which we must now reckon, O fellow inheritors of a truly abysmal timeline. They represent a decades-long (once again: at least,) conspiracy and victim-selection process that has been orchestrated at such a level of authority that both state and federal institutions and public resources have accommodated its perpetuation to the ends of mass victimization, sexual abuse, and the murders of children to a degree that I estimate will dwarf in absolute the found figure of 188 victims connected to the Epstein/Maxwell trafficking enterprise, as referenced by Harris in “The Pipeline.”

My inspiration to write this article was a series of news stories that I have read in the past week regarding the ICE detainment facility for juveniles in San Benito, Texas, where all unaccompanied pregnant minors detained at the border have been sent since July, according to Jesús Jank Curbelo’s reporting for El País on March 13, 2026.

Many civic and social organizations including, but not limited to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have sounded the alarm regarding the insufficiently-available maternal and prenatal healthcare that, in all likelihood, will not be provided to the pregnant minors at the unnamed facility in San Benito, due to Texas being among the most poorly-ranked states in the country in terms of maternal, pre-natal, and abortion care accessibility to even non-detained, adult women with native-born American citizenship status and financial security.

Many providers across those categories of specialized care have fled the state to regions where their practice is not so heavily restricted, and those that remain are wary of providing certain elements of the care and procedures necessary to ensure the health and safety of their patients, as both professionals and career physicians, for fear of being prosecuted by their state of residence.

Many of those aforementioned minors’ pregnancies are considered to be medically high-risk whereas the youngest of the bunch are just 13 years old, over half of those detained in San Benito having become pregnant as a result of being raped.

There is no conclusive reporting, as far as I have been able to access in my research, that elaborates upon when exactly these rapes occurred; ergo, before or after the girls were initially detained.

Once again: maybe someone in an elected office should look into that beyond a half-hearted, live-streamed swipe across the surface level of the substantially larger discussion at hand.

Not to mention the fact that the facility, described as a “shelter” for purely optical purposes (you’re supposed to be able to leave those if you’d like, actually,) is run by a private for-profit contractor called Urban Strategies.

In turn, there will be less— if any —staff at this facility adequately trained to provide the care that may mean life or death for any number of these girls in the event of a premature delivery, or any other unforeseen medical possibility that could occur at any stage of pregnancy.

These medical concerns, heightened by the extremely restrictive state legislation that infringes on both the rights of patients, and the rights of medical professionals and doctors to practice without fear, exist along the backdrop of the variance of additional, well-founded causes for concern surrounding the wellbeing of the children and minors being held at this or any detainment facility, products in themselves of a system that has allowed the Human Trafficking Epidemic to flourish under the auspices of legitimate government agencies and organizations in this country.

At the very least, from this point forward we need to advocate for the medical and human rights of these girls as much as possible from the outside: that means calling Texan officials, federal officials, organizing, and discussing even the most terrible of details in the public forum. We must discuss, delve, and deep-dive into the agonizing minutiae amongst one another, speaking so loudly, and in such great detail, that no one feigning legitimacy in the journalistic or campaigning marketplaces will be able to use ignorance to shield evil.

I do not think, at this point, that I need to elaborate further upon why demanding absolute transparency and continual updates on the state of their wellbeing is imperative.

It is under the dark shrouds of unchecked authority, and its orbiting, systemic silencing-mechanisms, that child abuse has been enabled to flourish in the United States since its inception.

On Wednesday 357 of our House Representatives voted against a measure that would enforce the release of any and all sexual misconduct reports brought against members of congress, effectively blocking its passage.

While those representatives can make the argument that they voted against this measure to vote against Nancy Mace, who has also displayed a shocking callousness in regards to the series of legitimate accusations weighed against Donald Trump, it is evident to those with tangible stakes in the future of our nation, unlike those whose futures have already been bought and paid for, that what is occurring is a massive cover-up, a unitary attempt at re-framing, and a level of bipartisan collusion that seeks only to further substantiate the wealth inequality of the status quo; and the resultant dynamic which allows the rich and powerful to prey on the children of the voting, working masses.

I can not think of a more wholly salient depiction of the state of our nation, as it has been entirely bought out by corporate interests, than the largest bipartisan house coalition-vote in I don’t even know how long: against the rights of victims, against the rights of their constituents, and in service of the system that has rendered so many elites in both governance and industry fundamentally untouchable. No matter how many people are harmed. No matter how many children are harmed. 

Whether it be through a still-fully-operational cabalistic network of human trafficking in and beyond the United States, or through the culminant devastation of an endless series of forever wars. 

Both criminal enterprises, that of the corporate war lobby and the means of trafficking, through which both the named and protected of the elite obtain their victims, are corrupted, underground entities operating outside of stipulations guided by domestic and international law in order to enrich the uni-party system that our individual “leaders” are demonstrably beholden to. 

Insofar as “nothing ever happens” it is not entirely unrelated that, despite the fact that the butting heads of our major parties have for once reached something of a harmonious agreement on an unfettered loyalty to a rogue ethno-state bent on carrying out the largest genocide in recent memory, their maintained oppositions in the realm of identity politics and the ICE Gestapo may only be defined by different allyships with industry leaders:— those beholden to exploiting undocumented immigrant labor, and those who have made their bones through exploiting prison labor.

Whereas there is no definite corporate objection to guide a legitimately-appearing condemnation on the part of House Democrats against the legacy of corruption, and the underscoring child abuse that was uncovered from the files, we can only assume that they have been bid by their financial animators not to take too hard a stance in terms of their condemnation of a system that has long protected abusers in order to maintain their donors’ positionality, as dictated by their bribery in the highest eschelons of wealth in our society.

I suspect that there is a similar push of a hegemonically corporate origin, as well, to continue the framing of this evident corruption as a product of only the two players Epstein and Maxwell. It is up to you, my cherished readers, to determine if that is a conclusion you are willing to just sit and take. Not unlike however we decide to go about our affairs in the coming days with the knowledge that our representatives, most of whom have been silver-shoehorned into their roles by a series of fortunate but random, undeserved circumstances of birth, will opt to continue the endangerment of the children of the working class well into the future. 

Is it because the endangerment of poor children, as second class citizens, allows for the preservation of the innocence of their own? Or have all 357 opposition voters been successfully blackmailed by an operation that evidently had the capability to extend to the far reaches of the earth, over the course of years and decades, in its endeavors to compromise world leaders in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, the U.S., and on the global scale?

The only clear “truth” we have to work with is the black and white one which came in the form of 357 sign-offs on the system’s silencing of victims who dared to come forward against those who share their official titles as alleged “representatives” for the common interest.

Me neither.

However at some point along the way, something in that guiding principle of medicine changed. The best treatment available at any given time is largely reserved for the white and wealthy, and much of the “research” that allowed for the development of medical science came at the cost of experimentation on enslaved or colonized communities. Those subjected to this experimentation often died as a result of invasive procedures, sicknesses from un-sterilized medical equipment, or an intentional exposure. In death, even many of their bones remain a spectacle: the remains of enslaved people can be found in European museums to this day. The Vrolik Museum in the Netherlands, for example, boasts a collection of 25,000 human specimens.

In its infancy accepted practices of accumulating medical information took the form of experimentation on the bodies of enslaved Africans, and displaced Native Americans, as well, in the instance of the United States. The oppression which predated such experiments effectively made victims into wards of the state through an assortment of oppressive assimilation programs.

European nations are not reprieved of responsibility, either, for countless human rights violations in the name of development and progress, such as Belgium, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Spain, each of which have obtained a wealth of information from the illegitimate coercion of oppressed peoples in one way or another.

Stanford Historian Londa Schiebinger has conducted extensive research for numerous publications on the nature of colonial experimentation on black and brown bodies. In England, 1721, the first smallpox inoculations were performed on a group of six inmates incarcerated at Newgate Prison. While speaking to the Stanford Review, Schiebinger discusses the log of English-born plantation physician John Quier.

Quier’s log begins in the year 1768 in Jamaica and details his smallpox vaccine experiments on 850 enslaved Black people. In addition to exposing pregnant women and infants to the fatal smallpox in an attempt to create a vaccine for “polite society,” Quier would expose some enslaved people to multiple rounds of the same infection in order to measure the strength of their health.

Through his experimentation Quier concluded that the harsh treatment and conditions reserved for enslaved people were likely not suitable for those “of fashion and of delicate constitutions,”— namely, women. It was for justifications like these that early medical experimentation was largely done on enslaved or incarcerated bodies. Unfortunately, this phenomenon is no mere relic of the past.

The driving justification for instances of “necessary” exploratory research on unwilling participants in the colonial context can largely be attributed to the theories of phrenology, eugenics, and Social Darwinism, interpreted and proliferated in a context of their own that is skewed to yield to ideas of inherent racial superiority. There are few scenes in contemporary media as apt in depicting the insidiousness of this perspective in its heyday (the entirety of the 1800s) (Bank, 1996) as Leonardo Dicaprio’s chilling performance with that skull in Django.

A purely empirical evaluation of the medical field over time is incomplete without recognition of the fact that those at the height of “progress” were complicit, and often devoted, to these pervasive and self-serving narratives as they applied illegitimately to a real science.

An adequate evaluation of the state of medical understanding at the time would, additionally, be remiss without the inclusion of the fact that during early industrialism, women were warned against riding in trains. This was done for fear that their uterus would be compromised. Both The Lancet, formed in 1823, and the New England Medical Gazette, published in 1863, voiced these concerns surrounding uterine dislocation and even the possibility of complete ejection from the body if subjected to high-speed travel.

More often it is women who face the results of a legacy of gender-exclusionary medical decision-making, and the spirit of sterilization campaigns included in many colonial projects persist today. These take shape in the prison system and are more prevalent along the poverty line. The sterilization campaign inflicted upon women in Puerto Rico in the 1950s was experienced by 1/3 of the female population, according to research by the University of Milwaukee.

In 2021, Bill Chapel revealed that 148 women were forcibly or coercively medically sterilized while in California prisons from 2006 to 2010, a fact he uncovered while researching prison sterilizations for NPR. Officially, sterilization practices made legal by eugenics laws were banned in 1979 for California state hospitals and in 2010 for California state prisons. Hundreds of women were found to have been sterilized under coercive or forcible circumstances in California, both leading up to and during 2010. Largely, those sterilized were women of Latin American descent.

According to Aisha Nnoli, M.D., four events dictated the course of the American medical sphere overtime in its relation to treating patients of color: The conceptualization of race into limited standards by Western society, the proliferation of slavery, the legal doctrine “partus sequitur ventrem” (making the children of enslaved women automatic inheritors of her enslavement status), and the American Eugenics movement (1907-1963). As a product of this legacy, many contemporary examples of racial bias in medicine push the fallacy that dark skin is somehow thicker or more durable than that of white people. It has also been incorrectly suggested that pain tolerances vary between the two groups, as well as the speed of blood coagulation.

In a study published by the Association of American Medical Colleges in 2020, Janice A. Sabin, Ph.D., reveals that 40% of first and second-year medical students surveyed endorsed the notion that black people have thicker skin than white people. These false statements were historically used as justification for experimental procedures on incarcerated and colonized peoples; this has shifted into an accepted form of misinformation that stands as yet another barrier between disenfranchised people of color and quality healthcare.

Commonly, we see manifestations of medical inequality appear in terms of access: access to maternity care, emergency services, and life-saving medications, – the best of these services are reserved for private hospitals and expensive insurance plans. Even in diversely populated urban settings, such as Providence, Rhode Island, which houses the highest concentration of hospitals in the entire state, the city has the highest level of delayed or foregone maternity care of any other Rhode Island residence.

The Rhode Island Women’s Wellbeing Index, published with statistics collected by the Women’s Fund of Rhode Island, shows that between 18-20.6% of women in Pawtucket, Providence, and Woonsocket received delayed natal care. These areas are more densely populated by minority populations. This number didn’t break 13% in more suburban or affluent areas.

Nationwide, 1 in 5 Black women die from birth and labor complications. This figure on maternal mortality, both during and after childbirth, is five times higher than it is for white women. There is a sick irony behind the inability of so many women of color to obtain quality natal care, in light of the utter perversion of the gynecological practice to coercively perform hysterectomies and other sterilization procedures on incarcerated women of color well into the 20th century-- whether with the intent to sterilize them, or to use them as human test-subjects for prospective white patients.

The way non-autonomy manifests itself in the present day medical sphere lends to the legacy of experimentation on the bodies of more persecuted women of color that began hundreds of years ago, and the matters can not be wholly separated from the institutions that bear the responsibility to provide care to the public.

When given a theoretical framework and historical timeline, it is much easier to make the connection between the atrocities of colonialism and the apathy toward medical rights violations seen today. That is not to say there is a dearth of examples in between that can work to assist in filling in any conceptual gaps, such as the ugly blot of time in American history taken up by the Tuskegee Syphilis experiment from 1932 to 1972. In this experiment, the test subjects were all Black men exposed to syphilis under the impression that they were being treated for it. In reality, they were being incrementally given the equivalent of sugar capsules under the guise of treatment as the disease progressed, destroying their health and spreading to friends, lovers, and family members.

In 1921 Sweden established the Institute for Racial Biology, which would house numerous collaborations with Nazi scientists. In the 1940s, similar phrenological experiments that amounted to inhumane torture (as determined by the Nuremberg trials) would be conducted by Nazi scientists in concentration camps across Europe. Under CIA Operation Paperclip, America contracted and relocated over 1,600 scientists and engineers previously affiliated with the Nazi Party after the war had ended. These “former” Nazis would go on to contribute to medical literature and conduct further research.

All this supposedly “justified” sacrifice for life-saving and live-giving procedures, and those most impacted (as is revealed by countless studies on colonial experimentation and genealogical trauma) rarely reap the benefits. This can be attributed to a lack of financial means to acquire healthcare or a general distrust in medical institutions that, evidently, have long been guided by misinformed standards of biological realities regarding the treatment of black and brown bodies. It is no longer a question of whether the ends justify the means when the ends are, thus far, so deeply inadequate. The ends have become continually weaponized, just as the means once were, in service of the false idol of white superiority.

Until the quality of accessible public services (including and beyond the medical industry) is equalized along all communities, until the forced sterilization phenomenon has ended in the West, and in all Western prisons, we cannot begin to approach a commiseration for our past.

At the very least, we can start by ensuring that our state-funded institutions dedicated to medical practice have materials representing bodily science in its actuality and not according to an outdated pseudo-science. Mante, Greenridge, and Amutah argue that “race is not a biologic category,” in their scathing evaluation of outdated class materials in medical schools for The New England Medical Journal.

The way racial differences have been categorized in literature, supposedly to better represent the phenomena of genealogical predisposition, have since been proven inefficient in contemporary breakthrough research. Inequity in medicine manifests itself between patients and providers on the interpersonal level and through the system as a whole. Issues of race in modern medicine will not be resolved until medical institutions across the United States and Europe acknowledge the violations of human rights and dignity committed in the expansion of their practice of saving lives.

This is an oldie but a goodie, as they say. It is based on an earlier article I had written for college classes that may have been, unfortunately, lost forever in the deletion of my student email. I wanted to include it on my Substack to reflect my realm of interest as a writer, but also in light of the frightening specters of phrenology that so plague us today.

Namely, a recent report out of multiple publications describing an ICE Detention Facility being used to exclusively house pregnant detainees, many of which are minors. This facility is in Texas, a state with a full abortion ban— and I would not bet that they’ve hired any natal nurses, obstetricians, etc., to be on-hand at the facility.

With the preliminary context contained in the article above, none of us can pretend that we did not see what was coming when we eventually parse back the collusion of our punitive system, and its trusty, corrupt government-machine, to find repeated instances of experimentation and colonial genocide perpetuated in the present and beyond.

That, in itself, poses a question: will having the tools to have known, this time around, change anything at all?

Only time will tell.

The core of a loyalty to a sectarian scripture is typically an inherited reverence, and through that familial lens it is especially endeared to each of the multitudes of individuals whose joined devotion upholds its perpetual influence over time. In turn, we also find many mysteries of modern science in that same realm of sociological inheritance; namely, the many untold secrets still being unlocked by higher minds in the study of epigenetics.

However, that baseline of sentimentality and taught series of ideals, woven in from birth in a myriad of ways, undeniably trespasses beyond an inherent assertion of taught loyalty and “nurture over nature,” when the lived experiences, turmoils, indignations, and sorrows of survival contained in but one, humble life process that inherited framework into a reasoned network of convictions, an internal code, and/or the abided principles of that inevitably adult and agency-endowed person.

That underlying moral essence may remain even when the individual converts to a more modernly complimentary belief system, defines themselves as vaguely spiritual or agnostic, or casts faith to the wayside altogether. We can only get so far away from Sigmund Freud, and the striking, lifelong impact of our early-developmental experiences within the home stand as testament.

Now: I, for one, argue that there is a lot more to it in terms of faith and belief,— but we’ll get into that territory shortly.

Even when making the choice, whether it comes as labored or liberating, to depart our inherited religious community or affiliation, we are still just splitting off into teams, tribes, and camps. Again, forever, and for all of time.

The agency and identity-affirmation marked by those choices and philosophical arrivals within the finitude of one life and its experiences may suggest to the reflectively-green that such choices as ours have never been made before, and that we are the first to the frontier of each of our earthly woes. But we are as narcissistic as we are inherently doomed and mortal in the way of such a conclusion; we should all know better.

Hydra - A monster of Greek myth with multiple snarling heads. Description varies; aesthetically it gives Dragon or, perhaps, a Griffin. When you chop the head off of one tangled neck, several more will immediately spring from the cropped wound. What an elegant way, I think, to illustrate the greedy of the word, always waiting in the wings for the perfectly-timed moment to collect a check from the bi-partisan bank where they last deposited their soul, convictions, and humanity.

Columbia - An artistic rendering/personification of the United States of America as a bad bitch; commonly used in early political cartoons to criticize the zeitgeist, cultural spirit, and/or embedded ideals of the nation, in lieu of just directly depicting singular individuals within politics and governance to criticize the whole of the establishment.

Saturn - Roman parallel to Ancient Greece’s Cronus; King of the Titans, who ruled before the Gods. Famously, Cronus/Saturn devoured his children to prevent, in advance, their usurpation of his power. Eventually Zeus, hidden away by Mom, who had fed Cronus/Saturn a big ol’ boulder instead of her bouncing baby lightning-wielding boy, comes back to turn Papa into swiss cheese: thus freeing his divine siblings from containment in his gullet and establishing the hierarchal order of the Greek/Roman Pantheon.

Cassandra - Apollo’s fuckboy ass screwed her over in the Iliad when he cursed her with premonitions of the future, and fated her to never be believed by anyone around her. She was the princess and saw the Fall of Troy coming from a mile away, and yet, was brutalized and murdered by Odysseus and his men when they sacked her kingdom; in part, resultant from Apollo’s curse upon her. Rest in peace Cassandra; you would’ve loved the phrase “I told you so…” And thus, many women in particular have become rather attached, at least in the online spheres that I occupy, to the eagerly metaphorical story of Cassandra: because of its eloquent illustration of the castration of women’s voices, even when they stand as the sole voice of reason, and as they have been thus silenced despite that fact through much of history.

Prometheus - Prometheus was a Titan who brought life, light, and knowledge to humanity in direct defiance of the Gods of the Olympic order (Zeus & Co.) He was punished by Zeus, forever chained to a mountain, and each day an eagle was sent to come and tear through his belly with its beak and talons to eat his liver out from his gut. Since he was a Titan and thereby immortal, his liver would grow back in between each time the wretched bird came and went, forcing him to sustain this torment for all of eternity. The parallels to the story of Lucifer, which are striking early on, halt at their respective punishments. Prometheus’ lot is final. Lucifer, after falling from grace, is not done causing problems through the knowledge he imbued humanity with. He becomes Satan; more fearsome, more powerful. In the case of Prometheus, our endowment with knowledge was a labor of love for the beings he had some hand in creating as they suffered in cold, dark, squalor and ignorance below him; but always in view, nonetheless. Arguably, he suffered more for his kindness and consideration for us. He has had no hand in the evils this knowledge has acquiesced of humanity on Earth, rather, Prometheus was of the tragic conviction that it would better sustain our lost way of life, enabling the mortals he saw like children to survive and prosper. To lead better lives. The folklore-foil elaborated upon above lends ample opportunity for creative gestation in various thematic directions, something that is maximized for each of the archetypes/figures of folklore discussed in this section on their own.

King Midas/Midas - King Midas is a king of folklore whose greed consumed him; when approached by some variant form of fairy, trickster spirit, etc., he wishes to be able to turn things to gold at will by touch, but phrases the question by asking for “all that he touches [to] turn to gold.” The mystical being grants this wish, and in various re-tellings Midas will surf the full range of emotions from utter delight to shock, horror, and grief, when he turns his various loved-ones and associations into gold statues of their lost transmuted figures; fundamentally losing connection to his personhood, his people, and, ultimately, the materialism and shallow, impractical desire that guided his amoral personal value-system, and created multiple needless casualties in the process. If I had a dime, amiright?

Ouroboros - The image of the serpent eating its own tail. And we are deep-throating that shit right now, America. Used metaphorically and symbolically in art, literature, and other mediums to illustrate or cue to paradoxes, self-sabotage, and/or legacy-like cycles of human error.

The Muses - Minor goddesses of Greek myth, each of which represent an artistic medium/discipline of study as the divine sources from which humanity draws the inspiration to create and perpetuate them. There are 9 of them, respectively, representing: Heroic/Epic Poetry, History, Lyric/Love Poetry, Music, Tragedy, Sacred Poetry, Dancing, Comedy, and Astronomy.

The Veil - A phrase meant to simply allude to what is “beyond” the constraints of life, death, and the physical world. This veil, however, is not made of a transparent or delicate lace, but rather holds all of space, all of time.

My errant pivots to comedy, satire, and hyperbole considered, in a time wherein it almost feels like our plights in reality were written with such devices baked-in, like a wretched prophecy inscribed by a cruel God in the wet clay of antiquity persisting to its present fruition, I have taken into account the potential destruction that my own mortal hubris and sharpness of tongue could inevitably bring me into my decision to further protect my material.

As I write, the days pass like years, and I have decided that it would not be ideal to let my writing on contemporary issues collect mildew as their importance to the general zeitgeist is, perhaps, mounting with the chaos of a destabilized nation, just the same.

Hastening the release of my political writing, however, does not detract from my dedication to one day see “Wisdom Tooth Blues: A Treatise on Everything” published, printed, and leather-bound.

Yet, for purposes of maintaining employment over the next few years, as I seek to pay my student loans off eventually, and not die indebted to the state, I have decided to put my more controversial analytical pieces behind the paywall of a subscription. If each subversive keystroke attached to my name is being monitored by an all-seeing network of surveillance technology far-above my comprehension anyway, then I might as well do what I can to earn some passive income off of my passion and love-language, my writing, before they haul me off for it.

My poetry will continue to be posted and available to read for free, as will the majority of my creative work. Largely, anything that involves fact-checking, research, compiling citations, and directly name-dropping our corporate overlords will henceforth only be availed to premium subscribers: my Loonatics. <3

The state, having a monopoly over violence, also reigns over how that violence is interpreted to be used in the public arena. As I have outlined prior, the enmeshment of religious rhetoric into the political is so oft wielded as a weapon by educated, capital-holding actors, to effectively disenfranchise the low-income voters who simply lap it up, having signed on merely to, as every genuine voter does, protect their perspectival conception of the “greater good” that lies therein or around their belief in freedom,— whatever that means to them.

The word “terrorist” comes to mind before any other in its early recognized synonymity with the words “Muslim,” or “Arab,” in inherent totality in American culture; something I am sure any other 2000s baby that had unrestricted internet and/or cable access, and an ability to occasionally sneakily wriggle out of bedtime until the wee hours, can attest to alongside me: Family Guy, Adult Swim, the puppetry of Jeff Dunham etc., etc., etc.,

The babies of and after 9/11, having been ingratiated into rhetoric of that exact association for as long as they’ve been conscious, have either wholly departed in outraged betrayal regarding all measures of the supplanted consensus on the label, or they have been effectively and conveniently shaped by the cultural motifs, expressions, and, inevitably, memes, resultant from an increasingly authoritarian social and political atmosphere over the course of each of our post-millennium lifetimes.

To cede, intellectually, to the latter cop–out is not even a partisan phenomena in this age of sheer social removal from reality, through all forms of tech and delusion.

When The Squawking Bird Sings

Alongside the cavalcade of poetry that rains down constantly in my inner world there is that influence of music on the psyche that exists beyond the neural confines of memory and capability. I can’t carry a tune or read music. However, early exposure to Broadway musical soundtracks, and their respective film adaptations through my both of my Grandmothers, supplanted the pivotal origins of the few songs I have written since. The rain of the poet’s reflection has only nourished the seedlings of song in my mind, as they intersect with culture and ideological revolution, long before I had the framework of knowledge to identify them into a creative structure.

This piece, still formative and un-scored, as I would have to kindly implore, and perhaps compensate, an acquaintance with such talents to assist me in the endeavors of bringing my sparse discography to legitimate fruition, is my first song of 2026. I do not think 2025 yielded one, though at the end of year before I penned an “Ode to Political Violence,”in a sense, from a perspective of satire in reference to the actions of Luigi Mangione in late 2024, to the tune of “Bella Ciao” by La Bandiera Rossa.

I have recorded that piece in acapella, and would be willing to release on this platform if there is any interest from my handful of subscribers, but I would have to add a trigger warning for offensive tone-deafness and vocal strain. Such is the plight of a writer expanding into alternative mediums less suited to their endowed skillset.

And without further ado, here are the origins of a song called “I am afraid of the CIA,” or something in that territory. After some more work is done on this piece, I would also be willing to release a recording with similar notices preparing prospective viewers for my lack of any musical talent whatsoever.
